Side Space:  SONJA NAVIN  The Insistence of Color

Reception:  Saturday November 23, 5:00 – 8:00 pm

Exhibitions November 23, 2013 through  January 5, 2014 at  ArtZone 461 Gallery

ArtZone 461 Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of two new solo shows for San Francisco based artists Lucky Rapp and Sonja Navin.  The exhibitions begin November 23, 2013, and are on view through January 5, 2014.

Lucky’s work is often text-based.  Her methodology incorporates layers of resin, paint and acrylic forms that create texture and depth.  The end results combine inquisitive statements that play with language, with the potency of graphical communication.  Works are intellectual and at the same time clever and familiar, accessible to a wider audience.  The 3-dimensional quality transforms the texts into work that also includes a sculptural appeal; one of her series includes toy soldiers fixed to the panels.

Lucky Rapp lives and works in San Francisco’s Mission District.  Local collectors have been following her work for several years.  ArtZone 461’s Gallery Director met Rapp in 2009 when she showed with San Francisco’s Reaves Gallery.  Since then she’s had additional shows in San Francisco, New York, Belgium and Germany.  Working with word, color and form she continues on her expressway of innovation and creativity.  The Gallery is pleased to present its first solo show with Lucky Rapp.

Sonja Navin was included in ArtZone 461’s 2012’s first statewide, juried competition as a Group-Show winning artist.  “The Insistence of Color” marks her second solo show in the Gallery’s more intimate ‘side space’ and lays the foundation for a solo show in the main space in 2014 or 2015.  With this show Navin also transitions from “guest” to Gallery Artist.

Navins’ current works explore landscapes and street views that reflect as the title suggests, colorful vistas full of light and brilliant colors and dark shadows too.  Navin has been painting and drawing since earning her Master of Architecture degree in 1995.  With ten years experience, the work has matured and grown to contain an individual stylistic approach.  She now includes figures in her work and some are included here.  Her artists’ Statement reveals, “My paintings are personal narratives or visual diaries.”

The ‘open’ “Back Room” space features the Gallery Library, available for in-house use and examples of Gallery artists works, demonstrating the variety and talent all produced by local, San Francisco and Bay Area artists.
